How to Create a Custom Connector in Power Automate?

Custom Connector in Power Automate
22 Feb 2024

This blog post will discuss creating a custom connector using Power Automate. Although Microsoft provides a wide range of connectors for different applications, there may be instances where we require a built-in connector for a specific application. We can create a custom connector for any application that doesn’t have an existing connector available.

What is a Custom Connector in Power Automate?

Custom Connector allows us to create our connector and connect data sources using API and authentication. It enables users to seamlessly integrate their APIs or services into Power Automate, creating personalized workflows and automating tasks. With a custom connector, users can access and manipulate data from diverse sources, boosting productivity and efficiency.

In response, Microsoft introduced custom connectors in Power Automate, allowing users to integrate their APIs and services. This innovation transformed the automation landscape, empowering businesses to create customized workflows and improve productivity. Today, custom connectors are crucial in streamlining processes and facilitating seamless integration across various systems.

Why Would You Need to Create a Custom Connector?

When utilizing Power Automate, creating a custom connector may be necessary. This is often due to the limitations of pre-built connectors, which may require all the essential functionalities or integrations for specific business processes.

Create a custom connector to expand Power Automate’s capabilities. Establish connections with unsupported data sources, APIs, or services for more flexibility and customization, empowering you to create personalized workflows.

Are you looking to expand the capabilities of your Power Automate workflows? Creating a custom connector in Power Automate can allow you to integrate with various external services and systems. This section will go through the step-by-step process of designing a custom connector.

Sign in to the Power Automate portal with your Microsoft or work/school accounts.

Navigate to the “Data” section in the left-hand menu and select “Custom connectors.”

Click on the “New custom connector” button.

Choose the creation option that suits your needs. You can select from three options: “Create from blank,” “Import an OpenAPI file,” or “Import a Postman collection.”

    • “Create from blank”: Allows you to define the connector’s endpoints and actions manually.
    • “Import an OpenAPI file”: If you have an OpenAPI specification file (formerly known as Swagger), you can automatically import it to generate the connector.
    • “Import a Postman collection”: If you have a Postman collection file, you can import it to generate the connector.

Fill in the details for your custom connector, including the connector name, description, and icon. You can also specify authentication requirements, such as API key, OAuth 2.0, or custom authentication.

Define the actions and triggers for your custom connector by specifying the endpoints, request/response details, and parameter mapping.

Click the “Test” button to try the custom connector. Use sample data or the connector wizard to validate responses.

Once satisfied with the configuration and testing, click the “Create connector” button to create your custom connector.

After creating the custom connector, you can edit, manage, and publish it using the options available in the Power Automate portal. You can also define connector properties, such as triggers, actions, and authentication settings.

Add your custom connector to Power Automate as an action or trigger. Then, use its actions and triggers to build automated workflows.
